Scent of the Trail

Scent of the Trails featured a series of custom-distilled and blended aromatic compounds sourced from the Regional Trail System, King County, WA.

Over a summer, I gathered materials (from plants and berries to horse manure and moss) that scented the nearly 200 miles of trails that run from the city of Seattle to the forests of Snoqualmie. I then distilled essential oils from the materials and mixed them to concoct trail-specific fragrances. Later, I returned to the trails and shared the fragrances with passersby, along with conversations about place, memory, and abstraction.
